EDAG History - Success then and today

Year 1969
Company founded by Horst Eckard in Groß-Zimmern near Darmstadt/Germany under the name 'eckard design', opening of first office in Cologne/Germany.  

Year 1970
Head office opens in Fulda/Germany, company focuses on development of automobile and manufacturing facilities.

Year 1985

Implementation of CAD-systems throughout the entire company.

1986
Company begins prototype construction activities.

Year 1987
Company begins globalization, founding an office in Barcelona/Spain. Independent Job Training Department established.

Year 1989
The Adam Opel AG consigned EDAG with extensive design works for the development of the Opel Calibra.

Year 1990
Project presentation of the Opel Calibra at EDAG´s headquarters in Fulda.

Year 1992
Company becomes incorporated, name changed to EDAG Engineering + Design AG.EDAG Prototype Center in Eisenach opens.

Year 1993
International trade fair representation begins.

Year 1995
Number of offices in Germany, in the immediate vicinity of automobile manufacturers, reaches 10.

Year 1997
Number of employees worldwide reaches over 2,000 Mitarbeiter/innen.

Year 1998
EDAG becomes VDA's (German Automobile Association) first automobile service provider.

Year 1999
Company becomes majority shareholder of WMU Weser-Metall-Umformtechnik GmbH and Hoppe Engineering + Tooling GmbH.

Year 2001
Assembly building in Fulda-West completed (125,000 sqft for trial construction of manufacturing facilities (parts)).

Year 2002
EDAG-Tec Centers in Fulda/Germany opened as interdisciplinary expertise center for product development.

Year 2003
EDAG opens an additional branch office in France in Sochaux-Exincourt.

Year 2004
EDAG has acquired FFT Flexible Fertigungstechnik GmbH & Co. KG Foundation of the first office in China (Shanghai).

Year 2005
Opening of the first EDAG branch office in Japan (Fukuoka).

Year 2006
Aton-Group joins in as main shareholder of the EDAG-Group.

Year 2007
EDAG has acquired Mühlenberg Apparatebau GmbH & Co. KG (Hamburg) and the AKTec GmbH (Hörselberg).
Staff levels rise to over 5,000 for the first time ever.

Year 2008
Company becomes incorporated, name changed to EDAG GmbH & Co. KGaA.

EDAG acquired LÜHMANN Ingenieur AG, strengthening the position of the aerospace business unit, strategic engineering partner to the international aerospace industry.

Year 2009
The EDAG group with over 5,800 employees world-wide celebrates it's 40th anniversary.

With the founding of the independent company RAIL GmbH and the expansion into the area of renewable energy, the EDAG group is opening up new business areas which promise to do well in the future.

With the presentation of EDAG "Light Car - Open Source" at the Geneva Motor Show and the International Motor Show (IAA), a body concept in the sense of purpose design for electric vehicles has been realised, using the latest lightweight materials, semi-finished products and joining technology.

Year 2010
New Competence Center for E-Mobility founded at EDAG´s headquarters in Fulda.

Extension of the company´s presence in Germany with the new offices in Heilbronn and Osnabrück. (Addition of roof-systems and cabriolet development to EDAG´s existing engineering activities).

Year 2011
Record Training Figures: 127 new apprentices und students start their professional training with the EDAG Group.

The EDAG Group's open source vehicle project "Light Car" is one of the prize winners in the nationwide innovation competition "365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas".
