Flow benches

Flow generation across vehicle components and measuring analysis

In our flow benches, we generate defined, reproducible flow conditions across the vehicle components to be tested. Typical testing  tasks are calibration of components, calculation of characteristic lines, as well as, final production inspection.

Flow benches simulate operating conditions on the test object, using precisely defined parameters, e.g.:

  • Mass flow / volume flow
  • Admission pressure / differential pressure
  • Temperature
  • Valve position / throttle valve adjustment, etc.

Following this, measurements are carried out on the test object, to record the reactions of the test object to the simulated flows.

The following vehicle components can be tested:

  • Cylinder heads
  • Airmass sensors
  • Valves

Cylinder heads

Flow benches for the development, for example, of cylinder heads

Air is passed through the inlet and outlet ports of the cylinder head, using certain defined parameters (high pressure, low pressure, volumetric flow, temperature, etc.)

Step by step, the inlet and outlet valve is adjusted by means of a suitable adjusting mechanism. The appropriate measuring technology is then employed to determine the flow characteristics of a cylinder head, e.g. air flow, pressure drop, and swirl and tumble flow.

Flow benches of this type are being used by top automobile manufacturers for passenger car development, and for the development of Formula 1 racing engines.

Air mass sensors

Flow benches for production, e.g. for hot film air mass sensors

With a flow bench for production, all components produced are tested. The characteristic line of the test object is compared with the characteristic line of a reference part, following which the decision is made as to whether or not the part is OK.

In contrast to standard test stands, the test stands created by EDAG are capable of dynamic measurement. The characteristic line is automatically determined by means of some 30,000 measuring points.

Flow bench for air flow sensors – Quality assurance in the manufacture of air mass sensors

The flow bench is used to record the output characteristics of the air mass sensors with the utmost precision.

In supercritical mode, a cascade of 10 laval nozzles creates precisely defined mass flow rates at fixed points.

A comparison of the actual air mass, which is known to the last detail, with the sensor display enables the characteristic line to be drawn with great precision.

Valves

Flow test bench for valves

Air flow directing components in vehicle technology or other fields must be tested under realistic conditions during their development.

On the flow test bench for valves, the following parameters:

  • Mass flow or volume flow admission
  • Pressure
  • Pressure difference across the test item, and
  • Air temperature

can be precisely set and measured, either in pressure or suction mode, by means of a pneumatic bridge connection and adaptive, multi-variable controls.

This permits a wide variety of tests to be carried out. Shutters and valves, for instance, can be brought into various positions, and characteristic lines then recorded. On flow sensors, the measuring display can be compared with the actual mass flow rate, and there are many more possibilities.
